How is a torque rod installed?

Sep 08, 2023

Torque rods are an essential component of commercial vehicles. They are designed to absorb and protect the vehicle from the vibration of the engine and suspension system. The rods are composed of two ends that connect to the frame rail and axle. The installation of torque rods is critical to the vehicle's performance, stability, and safety. This article highlights the process of how torque rods are installed.

Preparation

Before installing the torque rods, ensure that all the necessary tools and equipment are available. The torque rods come with installation instructions, so read them carefully to understand the installation procedure. Check the vehicle's manual to determine the torque rod location and specification. Ensure that the vehicle is on a level surface and secure it with a jack stand. Also, disconnect the battery and carry out a thorough inspection of the torque rod's condition.

Installation

1. Remove the old torque rods

Begin by disconnecting the old torque rods from the frame rail and axle. Use a socket wrench to loosen the nuts and bolts that hold the rods in place. Remove the old rods and set them aside.

2. Install the new bushings

The new torque rods come with bushings that help reduce the vibrations. Insert the bushings into the end of the rods' frame and then insert the bolts through the bushing. Tighten the bolts until the bushing is securely fixed in place.

3. Position the torque rods

Position the torque rods by attaching the axle end first. Insert the bolts through the brackets on both axle ends and tighten them to a specified torque. Install the washers and nuts on either side of the bolt. Ensure that the nuts are tightened securely.

4. Attach the frame end of the torque rod

Insert the bolts through the bracket on the frame rail and tighten them to the specified torque. Install washers and nuts on either side of the bolt and tighten securely. Ensure that the bolts are correctly aligned and tight.

5. Test drive

Once you have installed the new torque rods, test-drive the vehicle. Check the steering wheel and suspension system to ensure that they are functioning correctly. Listen for any strange noises or vibrations. If you notice any issues, investigate and repair them immediately.

Installing torque rods is a critical maintenance task that should be carried out regularly. The process is relatively simple and straightforward, but it requires caution and accuracy. Follow the installation instructions carefully and use the appropriate tools and equipment. Test-drive the vehicle after installation to ensure that the torque rods are functioning correctly. With proper installation, torque rods can help protect the vehicle's engine and suspension system from wear and tear, improving the vehicle's performance, stability, and safety.
